“Edge of the Loch.”

abstract landscape pastel painting of the edge of a loch in Scotland

Inscribe pastels on Clairefontaine Pastelmat, approx 100mm x 80mm.

Recently I joined a Facebook group called “Landscape Photographs for Artists” and this painting was inspired by a photograph taken and posted in the group by Morven McDougal. Earlier in the week I did a painting from a photo taken by a friend (“Bass Rock” painting in the previous post) and I wanted to try painting from a photo taken by a stranger.

It was a pleasure and I’ll definitely be looking to the group for more inspiration!

These are the colours used in this painting.

pencil sketch showing composition and tonal values

Preparatory thumbnail sketch in pencil from the photo.

I chose portrait orientation and a part of the photo to provide drama to the small scale painting.

The group rules state the the source photo must not be shared outside of the group but you can join the group if you want to see it. It’s a lovely group. Artists share their work there too and you don’t have to post perfectly composed, beautiful photos either as artists are inspired by anything and everything. Even a tiny detail or portion of a photo is enough to kindle creativity!
